A lost hippie paradise
Are you heading to Nicaragua this winter and a surf lover? We have the perfect hidden local gem for you. Welcome to the Surfing Turtle Lodge.
Getting there is an exciting adventure. Book a taxi in Léon, for a 20 minutes’ ride, then walk a beautiful wild land, to reach a little motor boat with a guide, to cross to the other side of the river, where finally, another local waits for you, with a horse ridden coach, to get you through the tropical forest. Trust us, the experience is totally worth it! Once you are there, you will be amazed by the endless gold beaches and surfers braving the wild and perfectly shaped Pacific waves. Disconnect to reconnect!
Ready for some eco-local love? This unique, hippie place integrates perfectly the surrounding nature. Sourced from their own farm, the menu offers delicious organic plates, cooked by Nicaraguans chefs. The Surfing Turtle Lodge has, as its name indicates, a turtle hatchery. Most of the lodge’s profits and guests’ donation go to supporting the building and the maintenance of this center. Assisted by a dozen of seasonal volunteers, its mission is to protect endangered turtles. From September to February, at sunset and with the help of Surfing Turtle Lodge’s members, you release the baby turtles to the ocean. They are simply adorable!
Several sleeping options? Yes, sir! You can sleep in the main hostel, in one of the huge shared accommodations. Psssst…take the beds on the first floor, next to the window, facing the ocean. You will be sited in the first row for the most beautiful sunrise spectacle, without getting out of the bed. The light is magic. Looking for something more intimate? Book one of the three private beach lodges for a perfect “farniente” experience.
And now, all you need is to fully embrace the Surfing Turtle life rhythm: yoga, surf, beach volley and good vibes. Are you ready?
