Original Story Travelers

Slow traveler : Maud, Founder of Sarendip The Label

Sarendip The Label is a French clutch brand inspired by travel. “I had the idea at the end of my holidays in Morocco. Inspired by their colors and fabrics, I create a gipsy chic clutch…My friends love it so much that I decide to create my own line of clutches”, relates Maud. “Traveling has always been my main source of creative inspiration; I capture every moment, every memory, the colors of the desert, the endless landscapes, the smell of citrus fruits at the market, the sea breeze…” Meet Maud, an inspiring and energetic designer, you can easily fall in love with.

I live in…
Paris, at Montmartre, in a little charming 3 floor house, full of travel memories, that opens on a little shared garden. Very calm and sunny.

Your job…
I created my own clutch brand, Sarendip The Label. The clutches are made of leather and Maroccan kilim fabrics and can be worn during day time or night time, with a casual or elegant outfit. I work with Berber women associations from Middle Atlas where weaving is an ancestral art and where every handmade item is a true masterpiece.

First travel memory…
When I was little, my adventurous parents took my sister and I, on a trip to Australia, and Malaysia. It wasmy first road trip. In Australia we backpacked in Sydney, visit the Gold Coast, Ayers Rock, Alice Springs…and then, for the following 2 weeks, we explored Malaysia and stayed in a little Robinson style cabin, on the tiny Tioman Island, totally wild, with no mass tourism at that time.

Most recent holiday destination…
For the last New Year’s Eve, together with my boyfriend’s family, we booked a catamaran cruise in the Grenadines Islands area (you can check Calypso Cruises; the crew is very friendly and well trained!). It was an incredible experience: a little community together on a boat, learning basic sailing skills, taking morning swims with turtles in crystal clear waters…Every morning, we decided where we wanted to spend the following night.

Most recent slow travel “crush”…
It’s so complicated to get there that few will have the courage to go there…It’s a beach bar called, The last bar before the jungle, on the little Mayreau island, discovered during our catamaran trip. They serve the best Pina Colada in the world!

I also had a travel crush for Union Island, a little hidden gem of the Grenadines archipelago. Everything there invites you to take your time…the Rasta people, the little organic coffeeshops (you need to try the banana pancakes and the fresh squeezed juices at Snack Shack coffeeshop)….the music and street festivities, the coconut vendors, the kite-surfers…A beautiful happy memory of simple pleasures.

While traveling, you enjoy listening to…
The noise around me: the crazy sounds of big cities like Bangkok, the jungle and the howler monkeys on Ilha Grande in Brazil, the birds and the sound of waves at Bondi Beach in Australia, Buddhist prayers in Bali, samba in Rio, the vendors of the Sicilian markets…I never wear headphones!

Best travel advice…
Don’t plan and book everything in advance. What is wonderful about traveling is its sense of freedom and discovery.

Places where you like to eat…
Rome and Italy in general. I adore Italian cusine: pasta, pizza, antipasti, chianti…The best pizza is at Al Saraceno restaurant in Sicily, Taormina. The restaurant has incredible views.

Best travel partner…
My boyfriend. We travel well together. He is an explorer and we have the same travel rhythm. Or solo. I traveled alone in Australia and Indonesia and I loved it.

Next destination…
A trip to Mexico at the beginning of May. We plan on visiting Mexico City, the Yucatán Peninsula, Palenque, in the middle of the jungle, looking for beautiful fabrics and crafts and, who knows, maybe a first step towards a new Sarendip The Label collection?
