Original Story Travelers

Slow Traveler: Amnon Ron, filmmaker and founder of Yafo Creative in Tel Aviv, Israel

I live in… Jaffa, Israel.

Your job… Filmmaker and founder of Yafo Creative – a guest house, gallery and production house in Jaffa.

How did Yafo Creative come to life… I started renting Airbnb rooms in a house in Jaffa and decided to invite creative friends and artists for Friday potluck dinners. Soon, these dinners became a tradition of community gathering and art performance that lead to many collaborations.

First travel memory… I remember going to Belarus when I was 7, together with my family and my grandmother, who was looking for any remains of her old house and memories. Not much was found, but I still remember the yellow leaves falling all around the city.

Most recent vacation destination… I went with a group of friends, mainly Hungarians, to a weekend in Cyprus where our friend, Kristof Steiner was hosing a pop-up vegan dinner. We traveled the different parts of Nikosia, and we fell in love with the people, their food and environment. It was interesting to go to a summer destination in winter. You get a more authentic vibe.

Favorite places to stay I don’t usually stay in hotels. I try to do Airbnb when possible. My favorite Airbnb was Kei’s house in Keihoku, a small, rural, traditional Japanese village in the countryside of Kyoto. Extremely special people and surroundings.

While traveling, you enjoy listening to… I usually  listen to Chopin on the plane. Each trip has a different soundtrack. Most recently Nick Cave.

Best travel adviceTraveling allows me to do things I don’t normally do. Talk to people I don’t usually have the opportunity to meet, on a daily basis and let them lead you to authentic experiences and avoid touristic destinations.

Places where you like to eat in Tel Aviv… I enjoy two places, both located in Levinski Market in Tel Aviv : Ouzeria restaurant with a delicious Israeli menu and Hahalutzim 3, specialized in French-Israeli cuisine. Beautiful and small.

Places where you like having a drink in Tel Aviv… Anna Loulou, my local, small and strange dance bar with the best eclectic music, covering Arabic, world, hip-hop and much more.

Best travel partner… If I don’t say my girlfriend I’m in trouble.

If you had a sabbatical year… I’d do it in Thailand for sure.

Next destination… Either New York or India.
