Looking for peaceful beach vibes and taking the time to slow down? Perfectly located between the Sierra Nevada and the ocean, Palomino offers a postcard like palm tree beach and a attracts laid-back, bohemian community of travelers. If you want to add an eco-design touch to your stay, book a couple of days at the beautiful La Sirena Eco Hotel: cozy jungle cabins, organic and vegetarian menu and daily yoga classes. It was the perfect location to relax at the end our Colombian Caribbean journey.
Eco responsibility, comfort, delight and design come together and represent the core values of La Sirena’s two owners, Martha and Chris. They are the founding members of Palomino’s environmental committee and host workshops to help educate the local communities about sustainable practices.
Located directly on the beach, the cabanas offer a comfortable amenities, beautiful outdoor bathrooms made with native materials that blend into the environment. There’s a “honeymoon” feel in the air so this establishment a perfect option for young couples.
Are you a yoga fan? You can join their oceanfront morning classes every day. Plus: Casa Coraje, their next door neighbor not only offers a beautifully designed patio, but also partners with yoga associations to offer extensive yoga retreats at different moments of the year.
Their menu an integral part of their sustainable permaculture project and serves as a connection between their own local farm, organic produce and the hotel. Food is stunning: from delicious whole wheat pancakes for breakfast to fresh smoothies and more elaborate dishes at night, you can challenge yourself to taste everything on their menu and you won’t be disappointed.
Probably the most surprising side of Palomino – not a real administrative city, with no banks, ATMs and very little or no WIFI- is its growing slow food scene. Local associations and slow food ambassadors organize events, workshops and food markets to raise awareness about the importance of the movement. Have a look at the Facebook page of Slow Food Convivium Palomino to learn more about their Mercado Local’s schedule and other activities.
Taste the shrimp ceviche at Finca Escondita, eat like an Italian at La Frontera, a small pizzeria hidden behind a souvenir shop, treat yourself with a delicious vegan feast at Casa Semilla, or dine at Suà, a creative slow food restaurant with live music and traditional Creole dances that will make you dream about faraway places.
If you want to end your evening with a drink by the pool, stop by The Dreamer Hostel. A great occasion to meet other travelers and use their free WIFI, an uncommon service offered in Palomino.
Palomino comes with a large range of activities like morning yoga classes on the beach, hikes in Sierra Nevada or “tubing” in the Palomino river with inflatables. The village is also highly recommended as a base to start exploring the vast Tayrona Park (and so beautifully shot by the Colombian group, Bomba Estéreo in their music videoclip), one of Colombia’s most popular parks. Another reason to put Palomino on your travel bucket list.
